Exclusive tips from a celebrity hairstylist! [coh styled]
Sarah Potempa is the go-to hairstylist at press events and photo shoots for A-list celebs, such as Emmy Rossum, Jake Gyllenhaal, Lea Michele, Adrien Brody, James Franco, Tina Fey, and the list goes on. While her technical versatility and creative talent has made her in high demand around the world, her down-to-earth personality and warmth is what keeps clients coming back to Sarah.
I had the opportunity to collaborate with Sarah for COH Styled, and I was truly impressed with her talent and personalized approach to servicing her clients. Sarah was kind enough to share some exclusive tips for all the future celebrities at TheCallboard!
CO: As a celebrity hairstylist, you style some of the biggest names in Hollywood, making their style come together with the perfect cut and/or style. How much do you think a great haircut/style makes up an actor’s personal style?
SP: A hairstyle is one of the first things people notice about you. As an actor, a big part of the auditioning process is about conveying you are believable in a role. Not only do you have to be a talented actor, but you need the “look”, and I think that there are definitely ways to do that through your styling, which includes hairstyle.
From the obvious advice, don’t wear your hair in a Mohawk if you are auditioning for Queen Elizabeth, to the sublime, for example, think of the impact the “Rachel” hairstyle has had. I think the hairstyle plays a big role in an actor’s style because it helps casting directors envision the actor in a certain role…and that’s what you want when you audition!
CO: When advising your celebrity clientele, do you take into consideration the shape of their face and facial features when recommending styles/cuts?
SP: I like to take some time to evaluate the shape of their face, the texture and hair type, as well as their facial features. A style that looks great on one person may not be the right for another. It is so important to take a minute and evaluate before cutting.
CO: Are there other factors you consider?
SP: Of course! There is nothing better than seeing a client, whether it is a celebrity walking the red carpet at the Oscars or an actor getting ready for his/her first big premiere, who is happy with how they look. I always want my clients to look their best, and looking good comes from feeling confident, so I will discuss my vision with them and listen to their input.
CO: There are fashion trends, and then there are hair trends. What are the current hair trends? How should one adopt hair trends?
SP: I simply adore some of the trends right now, like the Beachy Wave, which I use on clients like Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. There are some classic styles that I absolutely LOVE, like old Hollywood glamour – Veronica Lake’s set was perfect this way. There is something so wonderfully romantic about this style. Another favorite of mine is the faux bob, which I just did for Vera Farmiga. I love it because it is a great way to try out a shorter bob without committing to the full cut.
When styling a client’s hair, I always consider what event they are attending and what they will be wearing. Hair is really a huge part of a look, so even if you have on a gorgeous couture gown, you need to find the perfect style to compliment your gown. Hair, like fashion, should be fun so if there is a look or trendy style you are excited about, I say give it a try!
CO: What are your top tips for creating a great style for audition day?
SP: For an actor: envision yourself as your character and wear your hair as he/she would. Be confident because even if your hairstyle is perfect, if you don’t believe it, nobody else will, either!
CO: What would you say is the secret to great, healthy hair?
SP: The secret to great, healthy hair is to love your hair! Treat it gently. Make sure to condition your hair to lock in moisture. Get regular check-ups with your hairstylist to control split ends.
CO: Are there certain products you live by? Why and what are they used for?
SP: I LOVE Aussie’s 3 minute miracle. It is an amazing conditioner and really helps restore your hair to a healthy, gorgeous shine! A great universal brush, like my “Power” paddle brush, is perfect for all types of hair to keep your hair beautiful and healthy.
